Engagement in national climate initiatives

As a key partner in a number of national initiatives, the NSW Government supports a strong climate science community of practice among the states and territories, universities and with federal bodies such as the Bureau of Meteorology and CSIRO.

National Partnership for Climate Projections

The National Partnership for Climate Projections is a voluntary collaboration that guides delivery of a nationally-aligned and integrated approach to climate projections across Australia.

The partnership has 3 working groups (WGs), each with a different focus:

WG1 – Coordination of regional climate models

WG2 – Standards for data, technology and tools

WG3 – Climate services and user needs.

Members of the partnership include state and territory governments, CSIRO, the Bureau of Meteorology, universities and Australian Government-funded initiatives such as the National Environmental Science Program (NESP) Climate Systems Hub and the Australian Climate Service. Since 2022, these members have been working together to ensure consistency and comparability for end-users across Australia who are seeking climate projections data and information, whether it be for assessing climate risks, adaptation planning, or policy and decision-making.

NESP Climate Systems Hub

NSW Government also partners with the NESP Climate Systems Hub to support a team of knowledge brokers across the country. These roles exist to:

  • Ensure Climate Systems Hub research is easy to access and applicable to state and territory needs.
  • Work together to better align climate science programs and projects between state, territory, and Australian governments.
  • Help make climate science tools and information more useful for risk assessments and adaptation planning.
  • Connect Hub scientists with key stakeholders in the states and territories, supporting a process of codesign of research so that it meets state and territory needs.

NESP Climate Systems Hub resources

Through its research, and with the support of the knowledge brokers, the Climate Systems Hub produces a range of resources to assist decision-makers working in climate adaptation and risk assessment.

The Climate Systems Hub Learning Centre provides access to resources tailored to those new to climate projections, and include:
