Heatwaves are a significant hazard in Australia. They have been responsible for more human deaths than any other natural hazard. Temperatures in NSW are projected to increase in the near and far future. There will be more hot days and less cold nights. Changes in heat have the potential to affect human health, infrastructure, transport, emergency management, primary industries and the environment.
Office of Environment and Heritage is collaborating with other government agencies and research institutions to provide updated information on the potential impact of climate change on heatwaves and heat in urban areas. The research which uses the projections from NARCliM is aimed at supporting decision-makers in strategic and operational planning.
